I-PASS Leaders Recognized as Top Patient Safety Experts to Know

Two of the organization’s patient safety change agents are among the 90 honorees named by Becker’s Healthcare

BOSTON, Mass. – June 25, 2024— I-PASS, the gold standard for reducing preventable medical errors through improved clinical communications during care transitions, is proud to announce that its co-founder Christopher Landrigan, MD, MPH and board member Patricia McGaffigan have been recognized by Becker’s Healthcare among the top 90 Patient Safety Experts to Know in 2024.

This prestigious recognition program highlights and honors industry leaders who are continuously finding innovative ways to improve healthcare processes and transform safety standards, ensuring a safer experience for patients.

As distinguished healthcare executives, Dr. Landrigan and McGaffigan have dedicated their careers to reducing patient harm and improving safety practices across the industry. In addition to his work at Boston Children’s Hospital and the I-PASS Patient Safety Institute, Dr. Landrigan has authored over 200 publications and received numerous awards for his contributions to patient safety, research and education.

"Becker's is thrilled to recognize 90 outstanding leaders in patient safety and shed light on their efforts to continuously improve healthcare delivery," said Laura Dyrda, vice president and editor in chief of Becker's Healthcare. "We are thankful for their work and excited to see how they spark positive change within their organizations."

With over 30 years of experience in healthcare, Dr. Landrigan has made immense contributions to patient safety, continuously elevating industry-wide standards of care delivery through innovation and leadership. In addition to his leadership role at the I-PASS Institute, he serves as Chief of General Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, Director of the Sleep and Patient Safety Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the William Berenberg Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and is a practicing pediatric hospitalist.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be recognized alongside these accomplished healthcare leaders,” said Dr. Landrigan. "This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication at I-PASS and Boston Children’s Hospital in promoting clinical quality improvement and enhancing communication among caregivers throughout the healthcare system."

Like Dr. Landrigan, McGaffigan is an outspoken champion of patient and workforce safety and workforce wellbeing, organizational excellence in quality care provision, and working to advance diagnostic safety and nurse-led care innovations. McGaffigan currently serves as the President of the Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety and Senior Advisor of Safety at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). She is IHI’s senior sponsor for the Lucian Leape Institute and co-chair of the National Steering Committee for Patient Safety. Since her tenure with the National Patient Safety Foundation in 2012, now merged into the IHI, McGaffigan has worked with a global network of national and federal organizations, partners and learning communities to educate and mobilize regional and national health systems to address patient and workforce harm prevention and promote workforce wellbeing and healthy work environments.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to join Chris and the other incredible honorees in celebrating our hard-won contributions to advancing patient safety,” said McGaffigan. “Elevating the quality of patient care has been the driving force over my career and I am honored to join so many accomplished individuals in being recognized by Becker’s Healthcare for our transformative efforts.”
