Implementing a Family-Centered Rounds Intervention Using Novel Mentor-Trios

A recent study published in Pediatrics explored the impact of a novel family-centered rounds intervention approach on implementing the Patient and Family-Centered (PFC) I-PASS program. Co-authored by I-PASS co-founder Dr. Christopher Landrigan, the study assessed adherence, safety, and experience after implementing PFC I-PASS using a parent-nurse-physician “Mentor-Trio” approach across 21 hospitals.

Post-Implementation Results:

•    Adherence to all I-PASS components improved by up to 60% post-implementation
•    Resident-reported harms/1000-resident-days decreased in larger hospitals, those with higher levels of I-PASS process adherence, and those with higher levels of nurse engagement
•    12/12 measures of staff safety climate improved

The study emphasizes the importance of engaging patients, families, and nurses at the bedside during rounds to improve patient safety and safety climate. A family-centered approach to care involving parents, families, nurses, and physicians working as a team can drive sustained, transformational changes in hospitals.
